Raise your hand if you have ever let FEAR get in the way of your dream? Good, I see I’m not alone. In fact, the amount of hands that have just gone up, I can see that I am among good company.
FEAR is a Mother—and not the kind that feeds and nurtures you. It is insidious and will slowly creep into your life and overtake every aspect unless you are bold enough to get in its face and call it out.
About five years ago, I stumbled across a book that changed the game for me. It is called, Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway by Dr. Susan Jeffers. What I learned from reading it, is this: While most people try their best to stay away from situations that cause fear and anxiety, successful people are actively seeking those situations out because they recognize that the uncomfortable situations are the only places where real growth occurs.
Think about that for a moment. Chances are great that every situation you have ever encountered that truly stretched you and forced you to rise to the next level was probably accompanied with a belly full of butterflies.
Let me ask you, how many times have you pushed your limits and found yourself battling with FEAR and Self-Doubt this week? Month? Quarter? Or, Year?
Do you actively seek out situations that stretch you? Or is your natural default mode to remain status quo? Know this: Winners think differently. And guess what? You are a winner.
At this point in the game, you are savvy enough to recognize the things that keep you stuck and playing small and implement the strategies that force you to step into the life you have imagined. That is something you can’t do from the bleachers on the sidelines. The reality is you must be on the court, in the game, and occasionally getting fouled or an elbow to you face. It sucks. Truly does. But there is no other path to victory.
So looking back over last year, how many times did you hop down from the bleachers and get in the game? How often did you place that call to connect with that one person you knew could help you? How often did you throw your hat in the ring for consideration for the promotion or tried a new pitch? Did you ever give yourself permission to just go for something you had been wanting without any consideration for what others would think?
After 8 years as a business owner dealing with fear on a daily basis and helping clients to confront it as well, here is what I know for sure: It’s time to get up in its face and let it know who is the Boss.
